The agricultural practice of reuse of domestic sewage effluent is common in several countries and has a great potential in Brazil. Among the crops destined to irrigation with effluents, sugarcane stands out due to the large tracts of acreage and potential response to irrigated farming areas under water stress. To assess the effects of irrigation with treated sewage of sugarcane on the soil carbon and nitrogen exportation and productivity of the second ratoon crop husked without fire, an experiment was conducted with growing irrigation compared to non-irrigated sugarcane in adjacent area to a sewage treatment plant in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. Sugarcane irrigation with treated sewage contributed for a significant increase in straw deposition in the area irrigated with 200% ETc, about 50% more straw (4.8 + 2.7 Mg ha -1), compared with the sugarcane without irrigation (2.0 + 0.4 Mg ha). Irrigation with sewage effluent with up to 200% ETc promoted shifts in C content in the leaves and bagasse, compared to the non-irrigated area. In the contents of N, the increase was about 80% on the sugarcane leaves irrigated with 100% ETc compared to non-irrigated. Irrigation with wastewater proved to be a viable practice for the sugarcane cultivation, allowing significant increase in productivity, the recommended blade is 100% ETc, contributing to carbon sequestration, both in the form of biomass produced, as deposition of straw on the ground. |
